What Is Prenatal and Postnatal Care?

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PRENATAL AND POSTNATAL CARE?

Prenatal and postnatal care is essential for ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and baby during and after pregnancy. However, there are some key differences between these two types of care. In this blog, we’ll explore those differences and why they matter.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care reduces pregnancy risks and increases the likelihood of a safe and healthy delivery. Prenatal visits can help your doctor monitor your pregnancy and identify any issues or complications before they become serious.

Babies whose mothers didn’t get prenatal care are three times more likely to be born with low birth weight. Babies born with low birth weight are five times more likely to die than those born to mothers who received prenatal care.

Prenatal care should begin at least three months before you begin trying to conceive. Among the healthy habits to practice during this time are:

  • Giving up smoking and alcohol consumption
  • Taking folic acid supplements daily (400 to 800 micrograms)
  • Discussing your medical conditions, dietary supplements, and any over-the-counter or prescription drugs you use with your doctor
  • Avoid contact with potentially harmful toxic substances and chemicals at home or work.

Postnatal Care

Postnatal care is the medical care a woman receives after giving birth or after postnatal. It is important for a woman to receive proper after-birth care to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the newborn baby.

Postnatal care usually begins immediately after the birth of the baby and may involve a stay in the hospital or a visit to a healthcare provider’s office. During postnatal care, the healthcare provider will check the mother’s and baby’s health and provide support and education on breastfeeding, newborn care, and postpartum recovery.

The healthcare provider may also guide contraception and family planning and address any concerns or questions the mother may have about the postpartum period.

It is important for a woman to receive proper postnatal care to ensure the health and well-being of both the mother and the newborn baby. This may involve regular check-ups with a healthcare provider, as well as self-care and support from family and friends.

The Importance of Pre & Post Natal Coaching

Pre & Post Natal Coaching, or maternity coaching, is a specialized form of coaching that focuses on providing support, guidance, and education to women during and after pregnancy. This coaching can help women prepare for pregnancy, cope with the physical and emotional challenges of pregnancy and childbirth, and adjust to the demands of motherhood.

By working with a pre and postnatal coach, women can learn strategies for healthy eating and exercise during pregnancy and coping techniques for managing stress and anxiety. They can also get advice on breastfeeding, sleep, and other aspects of newborn care.
